What is Stewardship?

A word about Stewardship,…in the landscape and facility management industry the world revolves around the task of maintenance. Literally the best methods and techniques to “maintain” the equipment or facility. In short, it is about preserving assets as long as possible.

Stewardship, more than just maintenance, is the mindset for the next generation of caretakers of plants.

We propose different mindset, one that seeks to improve what has been given. Developing and applying methods and techniques which enhance and add value to the resources or system which is being cared for.

An example might be how we maintain a concrete pipe - it never gets any better, never handles more water. However, a stewardship approach to native planting in a stormwater basin seeks to improve the planting with each season, each visit. Stewardship of native plants is the method which preserves and improves the plants’ ability to perform. Stewardships’ intention is to increase the function of a stormwater basin, to enrich the diversity of pollinator prairies and to increase the quality of forage for solar field grazing livestock.
